Sundyne Corp - Arvada, CO

Sundyne Corporation designs, manufactures and supports industrial pump and compressor products for the process fluid and gas industries. The company’s products include high-speed centrifugal pumps and compressors, sealless pumps, sanitary pumps and other process engineered packaging.

Sundyne Corporation was founded in 1905 and executed several mergers as new innovations and changes in products continued to lead the company to increased growth and profits. Sundyne is now headquartered in Arvada, Colorado, and has four international manufacturing plants with 650 employees world-wide, and 350 in the Arvada location.

Sundyne has always set a premium on quality, even creating its own tools to ensure excellence. ACE (Achieving Competitive Excellence) is a quality excellence program focused on structure of the corporation, internal communication and external communication to customers. Sundyne needed a methodology that could dovetail with their existing quality philosophy to help streamline processes and eliminate waste on the manufacturing shop floor. Jack Rickard, then Manager of Central Quality, contacted the Colorado Association for Manufacturing and Technology (CAMT), a NIST MEP affiliate, for assistance.

CAMT conducted a Value Steam Mapping (VSM) assessment and training with 40 managers and quality leaders from the shop floor. During a VSM exercise, a current state map is compared to a future state map to uncover any non-value-added steps. Mr. Rickard noted that CAMT’s trainings impacted the culture of Sundyne; CAMT’s trainings “made people concentrate on workflow, not just working.” The increased efficiency resulting from these changes helped the company decrease its costs by $100,000, and increase sales by $200,000. Additionally, Sundyne retained $200,000 of sales that might otherwise been lost. Sundyne, in the spirit of continuous improvement, is currently in the process of further streamlining their assembly line.

Results:
- Sales increase of $200,000
- Retention of $200,000 in sales
- Savings of $100,000
- Reduction of motion on plant floor
